Getting your driving license in china is not as hard as it sounds. There are a few ways to go about it. You must have a working knowledge of Chinese, or you must have a friend that can help you thru the process. If you do not have either of these, do not lose hope, companies like Reindeer Station (http://asiaenglishonline.com/page/reindeerstation) can help you for a fee thru the whole process. But considering you have your friend or mastery of Chinese, and you already have a license in your home country... here are some steps. 1. Copy your foreign license into a Chinese one. This can be done for around 30 RMB if i remember correctly. In downtown Ningbo there is an office that does this near Zhong Shan Park. Make sure to go there early or after 2 pm, because govt offices are closed from 12-2pm (crazy right?). You must bring your original home license as well as your ORIGINAL Registration Voucher of Residence for Visitors from Overseas certificate (you should have got this from the police department when you first moved in) and your original passport. 2. Take the copy to the translated license and all the other things you took to get your translated license to the Traffic control department of the public security organ (i think it’s called). 宁波市车管所 print this Chinese and any taxi driver can take you there. You will need to jump thru a few hoops here. First... you need a physical (under 80 rmb). Eyes, Ears up down left right... that sort of thing. Don’t worry.. Chinese or no it’s really quite easy. Second, you need to get your photo taken for the license, and get a copy of your passport made. I believe it was 25 RMB total. All this takes place in the same complex. (I will make a note here that laowai are not common to come here… so we can sort of push ahead and no one complains. Actually… everyone is pretty nice to you because you are sort of an oddity. So go ahead… don’t worry) 3. The test is next. There are 100 questions, and you have your choice of English (Chinglish) or Chinese. The English one is pretty crazy, and the words are a bit unfamiliar... Things like "write off standard"... and the amounts of the fees and penalties. You really should know the answers beforehand. I have a copy of all the 1500 questions that they use to make the test. They use a different 100 questions every time. You can download the question here (http://asiaenglishonline.com/docs/nbdrive.doc). Use this to study. There are some patterns in the test you should be able to recognize to help you. For instance… most of the time a fine is either (20 yuan ~ 200 yuan) or (200 yuan ~ 2,000 yuan)… never anything else. The max wrong answers on the test is 10… and you can try 3 or 4 times no problem. SO take a breath and get to it. (if you get caught cheating… you will have to start the whole process over… but again…. The testing people are very leniant on foreigners. They can even let you in with a chinese translator to help you interpret the meaning of the chinglish or chiense test…… i hope you understand what i just said there!) After you pass the test, you will have to wait a little while until they print your new license. I think the total cost of the whole process on my own was under 300 RMB. It took a couple days to finish just because of scheduling for me. A couple notes… licenses in china have12 point on them. As you get caught speeding or penalized you will lose points. If you lose all your points you will lose your license and have to go thru clases. Some bridges in china you cannot go over certain days of the week dependant on the odd or even ending number on your license plate. Also.. watch signs becuase it is not difficult to find yourself going the wrong way down a one way Street. Its not like the USA… where a police car will pull you over and hand you a ticket. Here they will take a picture without you even knowing it and send it to you house.. with complicated instructions on how and where top ay a fine and lose your remaining points. But that is the Price you pay for the freedom of getting behind the Wheel in china. I really like the fact that i can legally drive here.. and enjoy the chances when i get them…. Even though i may get a little heated dealing with the crazy drivers in downtown Ningbo.
